For someone who spends a lot of time fishing in the deep unconscious to see what morsels I can catch through dreams and synchronicity, this raises the question of whether awareness has a catch-and-release policy I didn’t know about. Must random details from our waking lives be sacrificed to the void occasionally in order for us to extract other types of information?

- surely the point of your post is that twice *isn't* random - how did the friend feel? what is the emotional story here? the unconscious works through emotion and story.

- perhaps there is an unconscious connection between the thing that comes up before you meet the friend, and your feelings about that friend. are you 'dreaming her up' as part of the crisis process?

- if by catch and release you mean if you miss it the first time it will come back in other dreams/workings and if you miss the meaning then, then probably as body symptom or 'external' life event then I think that's right. this is certainly what Jung believed.
